Hear the Voices of Angels: The Montserrat Choir School Guide
The Montserrat Choir School, known as the Escolania de Montserrat, is one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, located within the stunning Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia, Spain. A visit to Montserrat is incomplete without experiencing the ethereal voices of these young singers. The Escolania offers a unique cultural experience, showcasing the rich musical heritage of the region and the dedication of these talented boys. The Escolania de Montserrat dates back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest continuously operating choir schools in Europe. Its primary purpose has always been to provide liturgical music for the Montserrat Monastery. The boys, aged 9 to 14, receive a comprehensive musical education alongside their academic studies. The choir's repertoire includes Gregorian chant, polyphony, and contemporary compositions. Over the centuries, the Escolania has played a vital role in preserving and promoting Catalan musical traditions. Visitors can attend daily services at the Montserrat Basilica to hear the Escolania perform. The choir typically sings during the midday Salve Regina and Vespers. Check the Montserrat Monastery's official website for the most up-to-date schedule. Beyond the musical experience, Montserrat offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and opportunities for hiking. While not directly related to the choir school, the Montserrat region is known for its Catalan cuisine, including dishes like *escudella i carn d'olla* (a hearty stew) and *crema catalana* (a custard dessert).
